Things to Know
Ok, let’s just start off acknowledging that running in Yap isn’t exactly ideal. While it sounds awesome to run on a tiny tropical island in the middle of the Pacific, the reality is a bit less idyllic. First, and most importantly, everything is privately owned. What makes it near impossible to just visit a beach, also makes it difficult to find a trail and run it. There are trails, and it is possible to run on them, but it’s not really common. It’s a bit like running in someone’s backyard, even if that backyard is large, has a trail, and seems to be deserted.
Second, there’s the weather. The hot, humid weather. I made the mistake of a midday, post snorkeling run, and I paid for it. Be more prepared than me.
Finally, the roads are not exactly made for pedestrians. As in, there aren’t many pedestrians, or sidewalks. I stuck to running on one of the main roads, which contained one of the very rare sidewalks on the island.
Where to Run
- Colonia Route
Distance: 3.9 miles/ 6.3 km
Terrain: Paved road with sidewalk about half the distance. It is relatively hilly.
Notes: This is along a paved road with some hills, and not much shade.
- Tamilyog Trail
This walking path leads from the east to west sides of the island, with a wonderful view of both coasts at the top. It doesn’t show up on Google Maps, so there’s no map here. It starts on the west coast near Kanif and ends in Colonia. A driver from our hotel dropped us on the western side, and we walked back.
This is not one that I ran, although Paul and I walked it. If you’re thinking of running this route, I’d suggest just asking someone at your hotel if they think it is ok. And, make sure you carry a branch with you!
Distance: Roughly 4.5 miles/ 7.2 km
Terrain: A combination of paved stone paths (flanked by stone money!), trails, and at the end, paved road. It inclines gradually to the highest point on this part of the island, then descends into Colonia.
What to Wear
Yappese society expects women to cover their knees. So, 3/4 length pants, a breathable tank top, and a hat are perfect.
Dangers
- Sunburn
- Dehydration
- Watch out for cars if you’re not running on the sidewalk, though the speed limit is an absurdly low 25mph.
Tips
- Carry a branch or bit of greenery if you are on a trail. It is way of showing that you are not up to no good.
- Bring water. Don’t make the mistake that I made of thinking you can buy water along the way.
- Expect people to stare at you. And then expect them to talk to you later on, when they recognize you at the bar. Because, runners are not a common sight; and there’s only one blonde girl dumb enough to run in the middle of the day, and half the island knows about her.
